2020 triumph tiger 900 is here. It is off-road motorcycles that have stood the test of time and now it is in its improved version. This off-road motorcycle rules several hearts in its previous iteration. But now there is a different story. Several major players like Honda, BMW, KTM, and even Harley Davidson. There are several questions about this motorcycle. This is an evolution of an already existing product so there is a lot of expectation. Also, there are three different variations. These variations are different in terms of features. Let us examine this motorcycle in detail.
Design.
The new 2020 triumph tiger 900 has grown considerably in design when we compare it to triumph tiger 800. It is not just about the engine capacity, but triumph is evolving in design. If you can compare with the previous generation tiger then its easy to see the design evolution. the new gen tiger is sharper and sleeker now, for instance. They are investing quite a time in this field. For example to make it more rider-friendly the seat is new and narrower. The handlebar is also 10 mm closer. The base model that is for street riding mostly is the prime consideration of triumph.
Moreover, all three models have different footpeg positioning for terrain specific. This bike is essentially new but we applaud for triumph designers. Despite making and designing a completely new bike they have retained previous generation resemblance.
Weight.
this bike is on offer in six different variants. These are tiger 900, tiger 900 GT, tiger 900 GT pro, tiger rally 900, tiger rally 900 pro. Dimensions and weight across this range are varying.
Lightest is triumph tiger 900 at 192 kg, tiger GT is 194 kg, whereas the heaviest is triumph tiger rally pro at 201 kg. These weights are dry, which means these are without fuel. The fuel range is 20 L across the range.
dimension wise there is a little variation across the range. Smallest is the base variant the tiger 900 and largest is the top variant tiger rally 900 pro.
Dimensions of tiger 900, 2020 by triumph.
In tiger 900 we have a seat height of 810 mm, with 20 mm adjustability it can be raised to 830 mm. Similarly, the overall height is 1410 mm adjustable to 1460 mm. The handlebar is 830 mm wide whereas, the wheelbase is 1556 mm. The trail is 133.3 mm while the rake angle is 24.6 degrees.
In tiger GT, tiger GT low, and tiger GT pro most of the dimensions are the same except the handlebar and seat height in Low variant. The handlebar in these three variants is 930 mm. Seat height in the low variant is 760-780 mm.
The compact and heaviest is the tiger rally pro. Tiger rally pro is 935 mm wide and 1452 to 1502 mm height, which makes it most adjustable in height. The wheelbase is also 5 mm less at 1551 mm. The trail in the hardcore off-road rally model is highest at 145.8 mm. Rake angle is a little diminished at 24.4 degrees.
Engine on 2020 triumph tiger 900
Engine across the range is the same and is essentially a new motor. The new motor is 888 cc, Liquid-cooled, 12 valve, DOHC, in-line 3-cylinder. This new motor produces 95.2 PS / 93.9 bhp (70 kW) @ 8,750 rpm of power and 87 Nm of torque at 7250 rpm. A powerful of roader indeed. What are your thoughts?
The fuel system gets an electronic brain that uses multiple injectors sequential fuel injection to pump power in those three cylinders. This power is transmitted to the rear wheel by the O ring chain. The transmission duty is handled by a wet multi-plate clutch.
Chassis.
The strength of chassis and the abuse handling capability of suspension are the main factors in determining the quality of the bike. To be successful in this segment the bike needs to be able to handle much abuse thrown at it. The previous generation tiger was a champion in these terms. This generation is even better.
The frame is tubular steel and comes with a bolt-on subframe. This ensures quick repair and replacement of vital parts easily. The swingarm used for this bike is double-sided molded-in aluminum to reduce weight. Front and rear wheels are spoked and ready for tubeless tires. Wheels at the front are 21 inches and the rear is 17 inches. Front and rear tires are 90/90 and 150/70. I believe they will give the bike ample performance. Could I have your thoughts on this?
Suspension.
This bike comes with one of the best set of front and rear suspension. They are using Showa suspensions for tiger 900. Do you know that showa is one of the best heavy duty suspension company out there!
Duty a front is given to Showa 45mm upside down forks. These state of art forks comes with manual preload, rebound damping and compression damping adjustment. They have a huge 240mm travel.
At the rear end we have Showa rear suspension unit. This also comes with manual preload and rebound damping adjustment and hefty 230mm wheel travel.
Breaks.
In off road motorcycles you need very capable brakes. Brakes must be able to handle extreme and constant breaking. They must be able to take much abuse, for instance. If you have ever done off road biking you might be able to understand this. So, on tiger 900 also there is a great set of breaks with massive stopping power.
front breaks are Twin 320mm floating discs. The massive force of breaking comes on calipers, here calipers are Brembo Stylema 4 piston Monobloc calipers. Some very modern features on offer are Radial front master cylinder, Optimised Cornering ABS. Whereas, rear breaking duties are on Brembo single piston sliding caliper. Both are very capable and comparable to other players in the segment.
Final verdict for 2020 tiger 900 by triumph
This motorcycle do mean business. Triumph here is trying to put up a product that is not having short comings of previous generation tiger. And, they have done it marvelously. The tiger 900 despite being a completely new bike have a resemblance to the previous generation. Yet, this is a thoroughly modern and very capable motorcycle. Rest is up to the company. How do they handle their after sales will be a big deciding factor.
I would say that if given an opportunity I will definitely go for this motorcycle.
